The Thirty Years War from 1618 to 1648 was a conflict for hegemony or balance between the powers of Europe and also a religious war. It escalated and the contrasts between the Catholic League and the anti-Chen protest Union within the Holy Roman Empire and the Hapsburg-French opposition to the European level. Together with their allies in Germany contributed the Hapsburg Austria and Spain powers their dynastic conflicts of interest with France, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.
The campaigns and battles took place mainly on the territory of the Holy Roman Empire instead. The war itself, but also because they caused famines and epidemics broke and depopulated entire regions. In southern Germany, survived only about one third of the population. After the economic and social devastation required number of war-affected territories, more than a century to ensure its consequences to recover. The Thirty Years War ended with the Peace of Westphalia, 24 October 1648.
